Military TSP Calculator for Monthly Contributions

Military TSP Calculator Guide

Estimate member contributions, BRS automatic and matching contributions, and a long-term balance without counting TSP twice in monthly cash flow.

Member contributions reduce current cash

The member contribution is calculated from the selected percentage and eligible basic pay used by this planning model. It is counted once as an LES deduction before household expenses.

Traditional and Roth elections can affect taxable income differently, but the calculator is not a tax-return model. Confirm the actual deduction and tax treatment on myPay and the LES.

Model BRS contributions separately

When BRS matching is enabled, the calculator separates member money from service automatic and matching contributions. Service contributions increase the projected TSP balance but do not increase spendable monthly pay.

Eligibility timing, contribution limits, continuation pay, vesting, and catch-up rules require current official review and are not inferred from a simple monthly percentage.

Treat fund returns as assumptions

Projection growth rates are planning assumptions associated with the selected fund, not forecasts or guarantees. Actual returns vary and can be negative over meaningful periods.

A projection is most useful for comparing contribution choices under the same assumptions. It should not be presented as an expected account statement balance.

Reconcile contribution percentages

Compare the calculated member contribution with the TSP line on a normal LES. Differences can result from mid-month elections, pay categories, deployment conditions, annual limits, or timing.

Do not enter TSP again under other deductions. Keeping the contribution on one tab prevents duplicated outflows and preserves an understandable audit trail.

Balance retirement and near-term needs

A higher contribution can improve long-term retirement savings while reducing the cash available for rent, food, transportation, and other monthly expenses. The money overview shows both effects in the same monthly view.

Members should use current TSP publications, contribution limits, and qualified tax or financial guidance when making an election.
